Today, singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and producer Freeman Young introduces himself with his debut single, “Running Back”.
Blurring genre lines, Young ties together confessional lyrics with dynamic delivery on “Running Back”. The British Columbia-based artist describes the inspiration behind the song, saying, “I was heavily addicted to someone. She wasn’t good for me, and I wasn’t good for her, but I couldn’t get enough of a particular feeling I had with her. She was my weakness. A clean break would’ve solved a lot, but it didn’t go down that way. I couldn’t see past her. I kept running back to her. It got messy. It got really messy.”
For as much as Freeman Young roots his music in smooth guitar, percussion and timbre, he also pins it to a singular journey as “a flawed kid” and boundary-agnostic musician. Born to Jamaican immigrants in Surrey, BC, Canada, Young was inspired by everything from D’Angelo, Radiohead and Jeff Buckley to Kings of Leon and Coldplay.
